A high ankle sprain is a sprain in the upper ligaments of ankle, above the ankle itself. These ligaments are attached to the fibula and the tibia, stabilizing the entire area for activities like running and walking.High ankle sprains can happen when have a fractured ankle bone. Sometimes, these can happen when the deltoid ligaments, the ligaments on the inside the ankle, have been torn.
High ankle sprains are also called syndesmotic ankle sprains after the bone and ligaments involved.
Causes

Symptoms

- One of the symptoms of high ankle sprain is swelling at the anterior and external side of the ankle.
- Bruising is present at the anterior and external side of the ankle.
- Pain upon rotation and dorsiflexion of the ankle together.
Treatment
Conservative
- Rest: The injured tissues in the ankle need time to heal. Crutches will prevent too much weight from being placed on the ankle.
- Ice: Applying ice can help ease pain and may reduce swelling.
- Compression: Gentle compression pushes extra swelling away from the ankle. This is usually accomplished by using an elastic wrap.
- Elevation: Supporting your ankle above the level of your heart helps control swelling.
Physiotherapy
- Treatments for physical therapy are likely to be undertaken to help improve joint mobility, strength, and stability of the joints.
